I'm Melissa; pretend journalist and currently real-life accountant wannabe. I used to be a kid in highschool, but I've since kicked the habit. At 18 years of age I'm just moving through life, enjoying my free-time and earning lots of money whilst still living with my parents. Continued on page 2...
Getting in ahead

“I've been thinking about you, your records are here - your eyes are on my wall, your teeth are over there. But I'm still noone, and you're now a star - what do you care? Radiohead - Thinking About You”
Well I’ve really let this place slide. Though I don’t think I want to do one of those really long-winded, “So this is what I’ve done in the past year where I haven’t updated..” kind of posts. My reasoning is that after I do a massive post I’m so exhausted by it that I forget to post again. Not this time, my friends!
I really want to do something to this place. Jazz it up, make it worth the money that I spend on it every month. I’m considering making my journal part of a subdomain and making the domain a directory to other places. I’m not sure. I wanted to start on it right now - figure out what I want to do, start brainstorming for some new layout ideas - but then I figured that if I do that, it’ll get really late and I won’t have achieved much and I won’t have even made a post either. Bad, bad me. So here I am posting first so that I don’t forget to do it. Again.
I turned 18 in October, which was almost 6 months ago now, and ever since then life has been pretty sweet. I think it was February last year that I got a job where I work now, at a Pathology laboratory in Sydney, and then I quit working for Target soon afterwards. I started off down in the lab doing data entry, answering phones and processing specimens - and while that was all well and sweet the people that work down there are absolute ass-wipes who I’d rather never see or speak to again. They’re that horrible. They’re so goddamned elitist and you don’t count for sh*t unless you’ve been working there over 5 years and you’re part of the “in” crowd. And to make things worse, out of the two supervisors, one of them is the head poncho of the “in” crowd, so of course noone’s going to make a crack down on the insane amount of workplace bullying that’s going on, will they? Needless to say, I’m trying to get out of there as fast as I can.
In November I started working upstairs in the Accounts department for my family friend pretty much full time. I took some time off for Schoolies (which was awesome! though another story) and my month-long trip to Perth to visit my brother and his fiancee (another story), but since then I’ve been working full time upstairs. I love it, man! I get recognition for what I do, people actually notice that I’m alive, breathing, have feelings and don’t like being bitched about to someone else while I’m in the room; and I even have my own desk and phone extension. :D I feel all business-like. I have one other co-worker aside from my supervisor, the family friend, and she’s pretty cool too. So I’m earning a lot of money, and enjoying it. Hooray! I only have to work downstairs in the lab on Thursdays, though I’m hoping and praying that won’t last too much longer…
The only other thing I want to mention about being all grown up and over 18 and all is that my parents have finally accepted me as an adult, and my mum and I (with dad occassionally joining in) have started our own little cocktail club. We have this really good book full of cocktail recipes, and you go through and choose what you’d like as your base alcohol (eg: vodka, rum, tequila) and then it showcases all of the most widely known cocktails under that category. I’ve never really been a tequila drinker, as previously I’d only tried it once at a party years ago where I was already pissed as a newt and couldn’t remember what it tasted like - so tonight I decided I’d try a tequila based cocktail. It was actually really nice! It was called a tequila sunrise, and here’s the recipe if you guys want to try:
Ingredients:
- ice cubes
- 2 oz. tequila
- 4 oz. orange juice
- 1/2 oz. grenadine
Directions:
- Fill a high ball glass almost completely with ice cubes
- Add tequila and orange juice, stir well
- Add grenadine to the centre of the drink and allow to settle
It looks awesome, and it tastes good too. :P I recommend you have a try. Next time I have one I’m going to take a picture with the digital camera that I got for Christmas and add it as a kind of photo journal thing of our cocktail club. Bye for now!
